Beach Girls original oil painting by Karen Tarlton

12x12
Beach Girls
Oil
SOLD
As time goes by so swiftly, I love to paint by memory moments that are etched in my mind like this, my daughters when they were little, hand in hand at the beach. They didn't often swim in the ocean but loved dancing at the edge of the waves and I can still hear their squeals of delight as each one crashes at their feet!

12x24
City Lights

I wanted to create sort of a foggy, or misty look so I used soft greys, blues and lavender for depth and warm pops of gold, yellow and red to really light it up! I love the look.....sort of mysterious. What city is it?  Well that's up to you!

Hummingbird Dance Original oil painting by Karen Tarlton modern palette knife impressionism

Hummingbird Dance
10x12
Oil
SOLD
Flowers and birds are two of my favorite things to paint, especially these agile hummingbirds. You have to use your imagination quite a bit when you paint them. When I watch them in my yard all I see is a brief blur of color and motion, and this is the energy I try to capture here.
Bold, expressive palette knife movements and energizing color!

The Birds and the Bees Original oil paintings by Karen Tarlton

 Bees and Blooms
12x12
Oil

Spring Birds and Blooms
12x24
Oil

I have a passion for flowers and when I lived in Virginia, California, Alabama and Florida, I had amazing, beautiful gardens full of local varieties of plants and flowers. I have to say I miss that living here in the desert, where water is rationed and the soil like concrete. In Vegas people grow very little or have rock and cactus gardens. I miss my flowers.....so I paint them!
I have to say, I still miss the scent of my lavender plants, the buzz of the bees and cutting my lovely roses and peonies fresh for a vase.  ;)
I'm in the mood to paint some sunflowers next and maybe my favorite Hydrangea!

The show will be hanging for the month.

New Orleans Rain Original oil painting by Karen Tarlton

16x20
New Orleans Rain
Oil

New Orleans will always have a special place in my heart. This original oil captures the magic of New Orleans in vibrant, bold color. Like Gumbo, New Orleans is a vibrant mix of European and African ingredients, with a bit of something magic. After a bit of simmering, the result is spicy, soulful and unique!

Original oil painting Abstract Nude impressionism by Karen Tarlton

Taking Flight
12x12
Oil

I can't quite decide what genre of I enjoy the most. I take it day by day. Today was one of the windiest days I can remember. Lawn furniture blew down the street. Tennis was canceled and at my daughter's school, large metal trash cans were rolling around the parking lot as if it were a ski race. The wind makes me crazy and grumpy but painting a daily inspiration always makes me happy! I hope whatever your day was like, this helps lift your spirits!

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.

Iris Garden and Harbor Boats by Karen Tarlton

9x12
Harbor Boats at Sunrise
Oil
SOLD
Iris Garden
12x12
Oil
SOLD
Both of these are painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives so that the canvas is loaded with texture and bursting with color. I want each scene to be filled with movement and energy, so I incorporated a lot of warm against cool color in the design to suggest that feeling. Combining short staccato strokes with long sweeping drags of the palette knife helps generate a sense of movement.

Original oil painting Times Square New York Rush Hour

Times Square New York Rush Hour
20x24
Oil
SOLD
Big drags of rich oil and riotous color!  This cityscape is a bit avant-garde and I describe it's style as abstract expressive impressionism! I like to capture the reflective dynamics of color as a moment in time unfolds. I also love to paint NY in bold color and here I use pure pigment, straight from the tube and quite a lot of it, to bring this scene to life!
