New Orleans is a soulful place so I always paint it in bold color! This one has thick paint and contrasting warm and cool colors to give it a moody feel. I hope it stirs some emotion and helps communicate something about this unique city.

Karen Tarlton Original oil painting - New Orleans Bourbon St. Jazz

16x20

Oil

Spring Jazz fest is just right around the corner. A time of excitement in New Orleans. Here my reflection on a late night stroll after all the buzz has subsided, and all you hear is the sexy, soft hum of the sax.

New Orleans French Quarter Jazz

Title: New Orleans French Quarter Jazz
This painting is SOLD
Size: 9 x 12
Medium: oil on stretched canvas
PAINTING: A sweet little Jazz painting because my heart is with Louisiana!
Cheerful colors and rich thick oil paints make this a stand out little painting!

THOUGHTS:
Change can be good. That's what I always tell my family come move time, and we have less than 4 weeks to go until the big move from Virgina to Nevada. We will have new spaces, new friends and neighbors, new schools, and a new place to live. Change can be good. We'll get to redecorate and maybe we'll learn something new in this new place....we'll see. Our kids, even though it's their third move in highschool, are actually excited about moving. Sad to leave our friends but we'll keep in touch. Another adventure. See what a positive outlook can do?

New Orleans Night

Title: New Orleans Night
Size: 20 x 24
Medium: Oil on stretched canvas
ABOUT THIS PAINTING:
Going on auction tonight!
I love New Orleans and love to paint it. I've had a few requests from some of my collectors in Louisiana for more street scenes with people and musicians so here you go! This one has loads of thick paint, broken color, and interesting textures and details. I like it and hope it moves you. Please contact me if there is something you request me to paint!
I'm working with a few other artists right now, trying to teach them my technique and painting style, but it is very difficult to teach. I think every artist really needs to develope their very own unique style and the only way to do that is to paint....a lot! I have been working with my daughters all their lives, but they don't like too much help. My oldest just won second place in an art show and I go to the reception tonight so I'm blogging early. I don't think they will want to have a career in art but you never know!

All that Jazz

Title: All that Jazz
Size: 16 x 20
Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Buy it now price...$299...contact me for purchase through paypal

ABOUT THE PAINTING:

I used many layers of color to achieve this broken color, textured piece. I sculpt and drag the rich oils in blocks of color and then go back and do it again. It's the layering and the combinations of color that give it its glow. I added just a touch of gold leaf as a finishing touch on the Sax. These two make me smile, I hope they give you one too.

Shades of Jazz

Title: Shades of Jazz
Size: 20 x 24
Medium: Oil on canvas

I think I missed yesterdays blog getting ready for all these art shows I'm doing this month. Sold 4 paintings at the show yesterday which is always fun. Everytime one sells I drive over there to replace it so I went back and forth many times yesterday! But I always list most of my favorites on eBay first! This one is one of my favorites.

ABOUT THE PAINTING:
I am always inspired by music. It can lead me to paint many different subject manner and in different ways depending on the genre I'm listening to. I love to listen to Jazz when I paint these vibrant and richly textured musicians and find that it makes for a lose, jazzy and whimsical painting. I have some great new colors I'm using, some really interesting shades of blue in this one. Hope you enjoy!

Purchase: Listed on eBay auction for 9 more days!

French Quarter Jazz Morning

Title: New Orleans Jazz Morning
Size: 24 x 30
Medium: Oil on gallery wrapped canvas

SOLD

PAINTING: I used lots of cheerful sunny colors in this one, and many layers of paint with a palette knife and a bit of brush. Whites and yellow, golds are dragged last for lots of reflective color.
INSPIRATION:
I just love painting these New Orleans street scenes; they make me smile!
I listed to some Jazz and look at some old photos and the knife takes on a will of its own. I don't think I will list anymore paintings this large for awhile though, it's just too costly and it takes too much time to paint. So I had to put a small reserve on this whimsical piece. Hope you enjoy!

Jazz and the New Orleans Beat

Title: Jazz and the New Orleans Beat
Size: 20 x 24

PAINTING:
Winsor Newton artists oils in my signature palette knife style. This original has lots of textured paint and brilliant color built up layer upon layer. Most colors here are blended on the canvas creating its own jazzy melody.
INSPIRATION:
I went to one of my daughters orchestra concerts the other night and the highlight of the evening was the Jazz ensemble.....absolutely fantastic sound and very inspiring! Hope you enjoy.

Jazz Quartet New Orleans

Title: Jazz Quartet New Orleans
Size: 24 x 30
Medium: Oil on gallery wrapped canvas

See eBay auction for purchase

PAINTING:
I applied a black and red underpainting. When dry, the fun begins! While listening to some great Jazz music...I love the Sax...I applied layer after layer of oils with palette knife. I sculpt and the added layers of paint building the musicians off the canvas, emerging from the colors and musical energy....lots of fun! I like the dark background in this musical piece, highlighted with the bright reds, blues and greens.
INSPIRATION:
Just listening to the music!

Medium: Oil on gallery wrapped canvas
See eBay auction tonight for purchase or contact me for commission
PAINTING:
I have a black underpainting to give depth to this piece. I then drag and sculpt with a small knife my rich oils. I used vibrant blues and greens and punches of red to bring elements of New Orleans Jazz to this musical painting.
INSPIRATION:
This painting was pure joy to paint. I love to listen to music and paint musicians in bright colors and rich textures. I hope you enjoy this one!

New Orleans Jazz

Title: A Little New Orleans Jazz
Size: 12" x 16"
Medium: Oil on gallery wrapped canvas

See tonight's eBay auction for purchase

PAINTING:
This original oil has a black, red and yellow underpainting. I then lay multiple layers of rich, thick oils pulled and scraped on the canvas. The Winsor Newton Artist Oils are the very best and so it is always so much fun to apply with palette knife...cadmium reds and winsor yellows to the canvas.

INSPIRATION:
My youngest daughter loves Jazz music so we hear it all the time...after all she is 14! She plays clarinet and violin very well. I associate New Orleans with this old wonderful sound, and it seems everytime I paint a New Orleans scene, I can't resist a few musicians!
