"Perhaps all artists were, in a sense, housewives: tenders of the earth household."
~Erica Jong

These animal paintings are so much fun.....I hope they bring a smile! I love to paint them in a patchwork sort of avant-garde style of impressionism, pushing my cows to the point of abstract impressionism I suppose. I have a passion for color and texture and if you look around you, you will see beautiful color everywhere and it must be painted!

Original oil painting - Rooster - palette knife fine art by Karen Tarlton

16x20
Oil
Happy Thanksgiving Rooster
SOLD
For over twenty years I have squeezed my professional art career between taking care of babies, cleaning my house and cooking masterful meals, and somehow, even on Thanksgiving, I find time to paint everyday!  My paintings always begin in my mind, sometimes while I sleep, so I do a lot of mental painting first.
My daughter helping me bake!
My other daughter helping bake pies!
This morning, while I was making my Thanksgiving meal prepartations consisting of baking 2 delicious pies with my daughters, chopping vegies and herbs and peeling potatoes, I  thought of several new paintings I want to start this afternoon!  Now that my turkey is in the oven and everything is ready for dinner, I get to paint for a couple hours.....yeah!  My youngest is singing, practicing for a musical audition, and oldest doing homework for college.  My Dad and husband are watching football (and I'm inturrupted by the occasional yell or moan).  The house smells fantastic, with the heartwarming scent of gingerbread from my Mom's cookies now baking.   I love Thanksgiving.

I'm so blessed and so very happy to be here enjoying every moment of this day with my family and I hope all of you have a wonderful day with loved one as well!

Intoxication

Title: Bold Beautiful Bird
Size: 9 x 12
Medium: oil on stretched canvas
SOLD
I just love to paint these colorful personalities! Many layers of ocher colors and then pops of red and teal make this bird sing!

I am recovering from some tired overworked arms and had to take some time off of painting for about a week. Just have been working a bit too hard the doctor says. I guess I'm a workaholic so time off, sitting back and relaxing are really not much in my vocabulary but I'm trying.

Title: Intoxication
Size: 12 x 16
Medium: oil on stretched canvas
SOLD
Here is a piece that I love...city reflections to the extreme! Lots of paint and deep contrast of color. Both of these paintings are SOLD

Big Bad Rooster and Aspen Lined Path

Title: Aspen Lined Path in Morning Light
Size: 12 x 24
Medium: oil on stretched canvas

SOLD

When we moved across the country we stopped at my Uncle's house a few days up in the most beautiful mountain town...Evergreen. Beautiful Aspens surrounded my uncle's house, a stand of Aspens, they are called, when in a cluster. I love the way the leaves shimmer in the light when there is light breeze and the sculptural quality of the bark and trunk. I hope you enjoy this one!

SOLD
Title:Big Bad Barnyard Bird
Size: LARGE...20 x 24
Medium: oil on stretched canvas
I couldn't resist painting another colorful bird! Larger for more impact. Very thick and chunky, impasto rich and dynamic. I hope he makes you smile!

Thoughts:
I'm trying to teach my teenage daughter to drive on the freeways here and it is soooo stressful. I think some people are natural drivers and some just are not meant to ever do it. I wish I could get her a driver, like in "Driving Miss Daisy", for the rest of her life!

Bad Barnyard Bird

Title: Bad Barnyard Bird
Size: 9 x 12
Medium: oil on stretched canvas
SOLD
THIS PAINTING:
Rich thick oil...painted thick and expressive as I do when feeling energized! This hot little bird has a bit of attitude too.
Thoughts:
I've been getting up extra early to paint before it gets too hot in my studio. Air conditioner is still broken and we're still having a heat wave!! Hot, hot, hot!
You'll be seeing paintings in all sizes. I have to continue to experiment and paint variety so I don't stagnate and I always enjoy painting lively new scenes so do keep checking in for more HOT new paintings!

Proud and Poised Rooster

Title: Proud and Poised Rooster
Size: 16 x 20
Medium: oil on stretched canvas

SOLD

THE PAINTING:
Rich, thick and impressionistic palette knife work defines this bird. Slightly larger than my last rooster and framed or unframed he makes a great focal point in a room. I love painting these colorful roosters using lots of blue tones with bits of teal on a golden yellow background. The colors all set eachother off just perfectly I think. Thanks for checking in and click to see close -up if you like to see more detail!
TODAY:
Day 1 of packing up and out. Everything is going smooth as silk so far. Hope you are all staying cool....it's hot and humid today!
