Original oil painting New York Summer Night Inspiration by Karen Tarlton

12x16
New York Summer Night Inspiration
Oil

This one is shipping off to a gallery!

We just recently got back home to D.C. from our weekend in New York
and it was amazing!
The most emotional part for us was the trip to ground zero which is now one
of the great wonders of our world; the new One Trade Center building, Two waterfall memorials built in the footprints of the two buildings, and the museum.

There museum there is so impressive and awesome - so
inspirational, just like the people of New York.

"Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it" - Henry David Thoreau

Well if that's the case than I'm in luck!
What a busy week :)
Summer seems to fly by in a blink.
Only four weeks left with our youngest daughter and then she's off to college
on the east coast.
I'm getting ready to travel to NY again soon which is exciting :)
Love it - even in the hot summer it's a place that
reminds us to imagine, create and inspire!

Original oil paintings and commissions by Karen Tarlton

Tammy's Angel
custom commission

I've been so busy painting custom works for collectors!
Here are a few of my most recently finished.
These bring me so much joy because I
feel such a connection to the people I paint special works for.
It's a pleasure and an honor each time :)

I'm also very busy working on paintings to illustrate
a brand new children's book which will be published this year!
More to come on that exciting news!

Both of these were painted last week before Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast.
I actually painted them before we even new about the storm
 must have had a feeling.
I hope all my friends are doing alright. Some I still haven't heard from which is worrisome.
Weather is so powerful.
Reminding us about all the important stuff.

Brand new work....just dry.
I'm working on a new Times Square commission that's really large! 30x34 but this one was a good warm up for it. A similar feeling of energy and the buzz of busy Times Square. Always an inspiration!

Timeless Times Square by Karen Tarlton

This is small cityscape scene for me. I usually paint these much larger. The same thick paint and bold painterly strokes of pure color are used on both large and small works. Dry and ready to ship!

Original oil painting Times Square New York Rush Hour

Times Square New York Rush Hour
20x24
Oil
SOLD
Big drags of rich oil and riotous color!  This cityscape is a bit avant-garde and I describe it's style as abstract expressive impressionism! I like to capture the reflective dynamics of color as a moment in time unfolds. I also love to paint NY in bold color and here I use pure pigment, straight from the tube and quite a lot of it, to bring this scene to life!

Times Square Rush Hour by Karen Tarlton

24x30
Times Square Rush Hour

I don't really know where the time goes!  I haven't had time to visit my favorite city in a few years.  When we lived east coast we would go every summer at least once.  I guess I'm missing it so this one is from the heart!

Times Square NY Midnight

Title: Times Square NY Midnight
Size: 24 x 36
Oil
SOLD
Part of last weeks city series.....this NY scene is a favorite of mine. Modern and energetic. I love NY and love the electric feeling of Times Square! This is thick and chunky palette knife work and it is still just a bit wet.
Dry soon and ready to hang!
I worked on several wild horse paintings this morning. I get caught up in whatever I am painting and like to paint them in a series. At least a couple more in me I think.
Super Bowl is over!!! Back to a nice quiet house around here, and I'm already thinking about what I'll paint tomorrow!

Colors of Times Square NY

A tiny little 6 x 6 Abstract Equine painting! Available on Etsy as part of a new summer sale and tiny painting series!

Title: Colors of Times Square NY

Size: 18 x 24

Medium: oil on stretched canvas

THE PAINTING:

One of my favorite places and scenes to paint. Blurry because this is the way I see at night, poor night vision, and because I love thickly textured, and slightly abstract images. It's modern and colorful and full of life like Times Square, its inspiration.

Going on eBay auction but will be available on Etsy too, if you would rather buy it now!

Working on some abstracts too.....I'll post when I get a few more completed! I've been thinking about my love of abstract. I think some of it is that it really is pure emotion. I have two teenage daughters and I think painting is helping me vent....painting therapy!

Thanks for checking in!

Times Square Midnight Hour

Going on eBay auction tonight!...........................SOLD
Title: Times Square Midnight Hour
Size: 12 x 24
Medium: oil on stretched canvas
ABOUT THE PAINTING:
This painting is on one of my new canvas sizes and I think this elongated canvas is so much fun to paint on. This size also fits on almost any wall. Lots of bright colors and deep textures. I love NY and love to paint these night scenes with the glowing lights and moving lit up cabs. I drag layers of wet on wet paint over a deeply toned canvas. Hope you enjoy!

Times Square Glow

Title: Times Square Glow SOLD from Arlington Art Gallery 5/26/10
Size: 16 x 20
Medium: oil on stretched canvas
ABOUT THIS PAINTING: I have a lot of broken and deep color in this painting. I pushed my color for that electric effect. This piece loosely captures the buzz of the city and the bright lights of the Square. My memory of colors, lights and the feel of New York were the driving factors of this painting.
I am getting mentally ready for another great weekend in the city. We go in about a month, just for the weekend and I am already excited!

I'm getting ready to fly to Paris and then off to England. You can expect many fantastic paintings inspired by my trip when I return. A couple times a year I need fresh inspirations and traveling is one of my other passions. I'm very excited about this trip! More details to come.

Midnight Rush Times Square

SOLD
Title: Midnight Rush Times Square
Size: 20 x 24
Medium: Oil on stretched canvas
Goes on eBay auction tonight!

ABOUT THE PAINTING:
Whenever I am about to go somewhere or wishing I was somewhere, I have the urge to paint it. I'm planning a weekend trip in Manhattan in May and already I'm ready to go! This painting is fantastic with texture and broken color and makes quite a showpiece. I used many layers of paint with a brush at first and then a palette knife and this technique takes quite a while and goes through a lot of paint! I would love to put it in one of my galleries but I always love offering my favorites to you all as often as possible. I'll be showing in a new gallery in New Orleans soon so that should be exciting!

Colors of Times Square

Title: Colors of Times Square
Size: 24 x 30....Huge!
Medium: oil on stretched canvas

ABOUT THIS PAINTING:

This photo does not at all do justice to this painting. In life it is electric and full of energy.
One of my very best NY scenes and I hope you go to my auction tonight to see some great close up zooms. I used a lot of heavy paint and palette knife work to achieve the great reflection action and every time I look at this one, I really want to go back to NY, again. I'm going to have to make a road trip in the Spring for sure. Hope you enjoy and thanks for checking out my work!

Times Square Reflections

New gallery opening reception last night!
PACKED WITH ART COLLECTORS!

I was very excited with the turn out and warm welcome the Arlington Artists Alliance and I received at our new gallery opening reception last night! It was lots of fun to see so many of my collectors there, and the gallery looked awsome!
I had a wonderful time meeting everyone and thank you so much for your continuous support and interest in my oil paintings. I'll be replacing all the art that sold, and put new art up at least twice a month so keep checking in!

MY NEWEST PAINTING JUST COMPLETED!

Title: Times Square Reflection

Size: 20 x 24
Medium: Oil on stretched canvas
See auction tonight!
ABOUT THIS PAINTING:
I wanted this to be a striking night painting so I layed the paint thick and bright! Bold deep prussian blues, under thick strokes of cadmium reds and yellows makes this painting unique and very New York. I feel the rush and energy of Times Square when I paint this scene, and hope you enjoy it!

Times Square, New York Rain

This one already SOLD....before it was all the dry!

Title: Times Square, New York Rain
Size: 24 x 30
Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Last night and all day yesterday we had a huge blizzard and I was watching the snow fall while painting a series of NY paintings and I had a wonderful time. I had classical Christmas music playing, my daughters baking cookies and memories of my last NY trip in my head. I love NY and love to paint scenes from this city. This is the largest of them all and it is specifically....Times Square. I used a lot of oil with my favorite palette knife and so it has a lot of wonderful texture and broken color. I don't paint this large very often, but once in a while it is a joy, especially when it is NY!

New York Evening Rain

Title: New York Evening Rain
Size: 16 x 20
Medium: Oil on gallery wrapped canvas

This painting is sold but you may email me for a commission.

PAINTING AND INSPIRATION:
I began this composition slowly from some old photos of my last trip. I love NY and miss it already. I love the people, and the glow this place takes on at night. I used lots of expressive brush work with lovely mixes of color in the background so that the yellow taxis would really stand out and the girl in the red dress would become a focal point. I painted myself with my little dog Maggie..do you see? I have had some requests for more NY paintings and I promise after the holidays to work on some more of these.
