I had an afternoon of vigorous painting as soon as I returned from this little outing.
The gardens and architecture of this place are almost more inspiring that the art.
(but the Van Gogh Iris painting is hard to beat)

This weather makes me want to plant flowers! We're getting ready to move in a few weeks so I'm trying to restrain myself and instead just paint them.
Come early July I'll be starting a new garden though!
I love to cut them fresh from my garden and arrange in vase to paint.

Romance and Roses

I painted this one extra, extra thick! Got a bit carried away but I love how it turned out and hope you do too. Looks great in a black or gold frame, but sides are painted so it can hang as is!
Homecoming is next weekend and around here it's a big deal. The boys think of the cutest ways to ask the girls to the homecoming dance. A few days ago the doorbell rang and when I opened the door, I saw ..."Will you go to HC with me?" spelled out in rose petals for my daughter. He also put a dozen roses around in sort of a heart shape. I think I was more excited than she was! Isn't that the sweetest thing?

Inspiration: Love of Roses! I love growing this flower, cutting it and arranging them. If you need any tips on growing roses, I've been growing them all over the US for the past 20 years and have become a bit of an expert.
Here are a few tips:
Roses love Sun!
They love to be cut back and after a bloom you should cut it back to the first 5 leaf you see and cut at any angle for more blooms!
Douse in soapy water to kill afids or get ladybugs!
Plant a banana peel under the roots to give your plant a potassium boost!

I love this still life. Inspired by my bountiful Virginia garden, I love to put roses in a vase and bring them to life on the canvas. This piece looks great as is but a gold frame with linen liner would compliment it well. Subtle colors and expressive textures and impressionistic broken color make this one of my favorite floral paintings to date.

Inspired by the blooming roses in my garden. One of my favorite things to do is go select flowers to cut and arrange in a vase to paint. Roses are one of my favorites, especially if they are fragrant. This oil painting is deep with color and texture and has both fine brush work and impasto palette knife work. I love to layer the colors to create bolder blooms and a bit of brush work adds a softer quality rich in color and depth.

ABOUT THIS PAINTING:
This richly textured oil painting uses lots of red and warm burnt umber and orange color values. The very cool blue glass vase against all the warmth makes the colors appear even brighter and I just love this juxtaposition of color. I've been gardening for days and pruning my roses for spring bloom which inspired this palette knife piece.
Will go on eBay tonight. I'm finishing up several commissions right now and I always welcome more!

PAINTING:
I wanted to paint roses in various warm colors and really set them off with a cool blues in the background. I love how this one turned out. I used rapid swipes of my knife , turning the canvas as I made each rose and they are so much fun to paint this way.
INSPIRATION:
Florals are one of my favorite things to paint. Each one is unique and has its own personality. This one is very romantic! Would make a great gift.

Scarlet Red Roses

PAINTING:
This original oil has a subtle dark underpainting and then rich, buttery oils are dragged swirled and scraped across the canvas to create this illuminating still life. I used mixtures of cobalt and manganese blues on the vase and cadmium and rose reds on the roses.
INSPIRATION:
My husband has a wonderful airforce career. I love him and am so proud of him. Before his last deployment to Afghanistan he gave me a bunch of red roses. He knows I love to arrange and paint them, and while I do, they are close to me and I get to smell them the whole time I paint.
