 I decided to make these a bit more blue then they turned out this year.

This bush has is very old and years ago had blue flowers. It's amazing how the blooms

change color with the acid content of the soil.

One of my favorite flowers! There are so many beautiful almost irridecent colors in this flower that it is perfect to paint. I love how it changes color as the summer progresses. My 30 year old plant in Arlington VA changes from pink to blue and the blooms are the size of cabbages!
Lots of rich thick oil on this for added texture!

Hydrangeas

Our house in Virginia was built in the 1950's and I believe this beautiful old Hydrangea bush was planted then. It is wonderful to watch the blooms turn from pink to a lovely greenish blue, which is my favorite. I love the texture and fullness of this flower, so much fun to arrange and paint.

THE PAINTING:

I love contrasts of color, so playing warm orange/reds off against cool blues is just fantastic. Because the colors compliment eachother, they become more powerful, and extreme texture and broken color makes the painting unique.

I'm having a wonderful time with color lately, so much in fact that I am painting a new series of ABSTRACT paintings, I mean VERY ABSTRACT paintings, some acrylic and some oil and some using both that I will be ready to show in the coming months. The beauty of abstract art is that is all about color and movement and form. Pure and from the moment, and can never be duplicated or copied. Unbelievable freeing and fun.

SELECTING THE "RIGHT" ARTWORK for your home:

I think for many people an art purchase can be a big step....so here are some tips I tell my collectors:

1. Mood. What mood are you looking for in the space? Artwork can be energectic, impactful and the focal point of the room, or it can be a subtle complement to the the room, the choice is yours.

2. Either way it should make the space feel complete, and give the room a lift!

Designers help their clients select artwork which sets the mood of the room and has all the colors that work with the room...it's really pretty simple.

3. The artwork should make you feel good, and should be a reflection of you! There is no right or wrong, if it's the right piece for your space....you'll know it!

4. FILL YOUR HOME with art you love that is a reflection of your personality.....and hopefully some of it will be mine!

PAINTING:

A brightly colored abstract acrylic underpainting was applied and when dry I began many layers of oils with palette knife. Going dark to light and lean to fat, the images begin to come to life. Pops of bright yellow and complementary blues make this painting sing.

INSPIRATION:

This morning I cut big fluffy hydrangeas from my old bush on the side of the house. It is always amazing to me how these flowers change color and can vary so greatly in hue. They are starting to turn a bit silvery blue because Fall's chillier air is on its way, so this might be one of my last arrangements of the season.
