Vineyard landscape and Lavender landscape by Karen Tarlton palette knife fine art impressionism

I love the lovely tapestry of color that seems to be woven through rural landscapes.
Plein air painting was my thing for over 10 years because I love the way the colors seem richer and brighter outdoors.
Hope you enjoy this new one.

Original oil paintings by Karen Tarlton Giraffe portrait and Lavender landscape palette knife impressionism

These are new palette knife and oil works.  I used Cad reds, winsor yellows and blues. I again played with the cool against the warm colors and these have great texture too.

French Country Lavender painting by Karen Tarlton palette knife impressionism

The below painting was inspired by my recent trip to Burgundy
region of France.
Such light there that you can't see in the photos but I display
in my painting and such a calm, peaceful place.
Lovely and plenty of wine and "proper" cheese with each meal :)

Such a fragance!
Nothing like Lavender, and fields of purple are so magical!
I always plant as much Lavender as I can, but you need sunshine to see it bloom.
Mine's not blooming all that much but in Provence.....oohh la la!

Bright, cheerful and light with expressive palette knife work.
This is Provence; great light and the rich scent of lavender in the air.
We didn't get to take a trip there this year but I'm hoping by next year.
It's been awhile and it's time to see my favorite places again.
Until then, I have the canvas to bring it to light!

France! Beauty everywhere....... and this place smells lovely too.

"I see my path, but I don't know where it leads. Not knowing where I'm going is what inspires me to travel it."
~Rosalia de Castro

My heart is there.....France! Often times, journeys of the heart are some of the best trips we take: Painted from photos of past travels, this original oil depicts the most beautiful place to see Provence lavender - the Senanque Abbey, a Cistercian abbey near the village of Gordes.

Some people see something lovely and want to take a picture and just enjoy gazing at it.
When I see something beautiful, I say to myself, "I have to paint that"
My instinct is to paint it immediately, right away and that is why I fell in love with plein air painting.

Not much time to paint when traveling, there's too much to see! I've learned to be patient and store the images in the back of my mind until I'm ready to load up my palette with large amounts of paint and dive into it with my trusty little knife.
This one was painted in the studio and is just dry!

Original oil painting Provence Lavender by Karen Tarlton

20x24
Provence Lavender
Oil
SOLD
This large original is one of my favorite lavender paintings, and I've painted quite a few! There's something special about a sunny day and the fragrant earthy smell of lavender that is hard to forget. Every once in awhile I break out an old photo from a past trip and when I start painting, I can almost smell it again!

Lovely Lavender

Title: Lovely Lavender
Size: 20 x 24
Medium: Oil on gallery wrapped canvas
See eBay auction tonight or contact me for purchase info.
PAINTING:
Another cheerful landscape with the lots of oil layering. It begins with dark and light washes one on top of the other and then the thicker painting begins. It's bright, with contrasting blues and golds. A lovely composition and very French in color.
INSPIRATION:
I've been into all kinds of lavender lately. Planted some in my yard and just love its fragrance. Now I'm buying lavender lotions and soaps. I never get tired of smelling it or painting it!

Fields of Lavender and Gold

Title: Fields of Lavender and Gold
Size: 24 x 30
Medium: Oil on gallery wrapped canvas

See eBay auction tonight for purchase

PAINTING:
This large original oil has a black, orange and blue underpainting. I used a palette knife on most of this one, dragging bits of mixed blues and purples in my lavender and blended golds and cadmium yellows in the fields. I spent some time on the sky with some textured brushwork in the clouds and hillside.
INSPIRATION:
The vineyard bed and breakfast in Verona, Italy called Musella has beautifully inspiring countryside. A tapestry of color and folliage....olive groves, vineyards, lavender and forests. It was acres of beauty and this is one of my large studio paintings done from a smaller pochade.

Sea of Lavender

Title: Sea of Lavender
Size: 20 x 24
Medium: Oil on gallery wrapped canvas

Check out my eBay auction tonight for purchase

PAINTING:
I layed on a dark acrylic underpainting in palette knife as I usually do. Then with knife applied various shades of lavender with gold rows imbetween. Many shades of greens were added to the mountains and details on the little houses on the hillside. I used a bit of brush on these clouds to make them light and fluffy.

INSPIRATION:
I recently returned from Italy and the vineyard I stayed at for some of the time had olive groves, vineyards, sunflowers and lavender everywhere! It was so inspiring and beautiful. I love the scent of lavender so much I had to plant some in my yard as soon as I got home!
