Red Umbrella

Title: Red Umbrella

size: 12 x 16

Medium: oil on stretched canvas

THE PAINTING:

Focal point on this painting is the red, of course the red umbrella and woman. Contrast is so exciting in a painting and I painted this one extra thick with impasto texture for extra drama and impact.

Today:

Wonderful day today....life is good when the air is cool. I'm loving this studio with all the window light and space. I think of Virginia and my friends there often and this painting is a reflection of memories there.

going on auction tonight....thanks for stopping by!

ABOUT THIS PAINTING:

This painting was done awhile ago and I love to paint, impasto, like this. Here the paint is piled on like icing with a palette knife, and with decisive strokes, the paint is pulled and carved
into shapes. Why apply paint as if frosting a cake? I really enjoy the tactile, sculptural quality of thick oil color. Some of my favorite master artists used impasto techniques as well, like, van Gogh, Edgar Payne. Sometimes I build my paint layer upon layer, letting layers dry imbetween, but in this piece, the exciting, bold texture is done wet-into-wet, as is suiting to this rainy painting! I will be painting some larger rain paintings like this in the coming weeks. Hope you enjoy!

PAINTING and INSPIRATION:

It's that time of year! It's bundle up and break out your umbrella time here in Virginia and I love to paint rain this way. This original has lots of texture and broken color and is my favorite rain painting in awhile. I hope you can zoom in on some of the great textures in this one.

I hope everyone has a great holiday with family and friends. Thanks for looking!
